In July 2021, Elisa Loncón, an Indigenous Mapuche woman and university professor, was chosen to lead the 155 member citizens assembly tasked with drafting a new constitution for Chile. The assembly is gender balanced – the first such body in the world to achieve this. Chile’s current constitution, in place since the Pinochet era, does not even mention the country’s indigenous peoples.

In February 2021 the UAE successfully landed the ‘Hope’ probe on Mars, guided by a scientific team that was 80 percent female. The UAE Space Agency is chaired by 34-year-old Sarah Al Amiri, who is also the country’s first ever female Minister of State for Advanced Technology.

21-year-old Maya Ghazal is a Syrian refugee, a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, a student and a qualified pilot. She arrived in the UK from war-torn Syria in 2017 and didn’t speak a word of English. By 2018 she had recorded a TED talk making the case for the limitless potential of refugees, titled ‘Education, Aspiration, Compassion.’ In March 2021, Marie Claire magazine named her as one of five ‘Gen Z activists transforming the world.’

On January 20th 2021 Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first female, and first Black and South Asian Vice President of the United States. She had previously served as a senator and as attorney general for the state of California. On November 7th 2020, having been confirmed as Vice President-elect following Joe Biden’s election victory over Donald Trump, Harris said,

« While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. »
